Essentially, it's a game of strategy. Just like chess. However, in American football it is not about trying to checkmate your opponent, but instead about getting as far up the field as possible.
The quarterback, the blockers and the catchers, 11 players and 34 substitutes in all, whose play has to be coordinated. If your play is to be successful, you have to able to carry the ball behind the opponents' line for a touchdown. Sounds easy, but unfortunately there are also other players on the field who have their own agenda.
